On June 11th, Binance Labs announced an investment in Zircuit, a developer of Ethereum Layer2 networks, without disclosing the amount. Binance Labs’ investment in Zircuit was made prior to the network’s mainnet launch this summer. Both companies have declined to reveal the scale of the investment and other terms of the deal.
The re-staking race this year is becoming increasingly competitive.
Not only are there numerous re-staking protocols associated with EigenLayer, but now even infrastructure projects that are not directly related are also keen to capitalize on this hot topic full of traffic and revenue, attempting to leverage the interest-bearing characteristics of re-staking assets to inject more liquidity into their chains.
On February 23rd, Zircuit, a zk-Rollup endorsed by Pantera and Dragonfly, announced new activity on social media: Zircuit Staking, which allows users to deposit native ETH or liquidity-staked, re-staking tokens into Zircuit to earn points for the project and native rewards from re-staking.
This also means that the multi-layered liquidity staking has a new destination.
If you have actively participated in re-staking projects related to EigenLayer before, you can now make the most of your LRT in hand, deposit it into Zircuit, maximize returns, and try to win Zircuit’s airdrop.
Considering Zircuit’s endorsement by top-tier VCs and its cooperation with numerous LRT projects, participating in this staking activity may become the next hot topic in the LRT race.
Currently, Zircuit is still in the testnet phase, with its mainnet expected to launch as early as this summer.
Today, the editor will introduce this project to you.
What is Zircuit?
Zircuit is developed by a team that has received multiple research grants from the Ethereum Foundation and is supported by Pantera Capital and Dragonfly Capital. On November 9th last year, Zircuit’s public testnet was officially launched. It is fully compatible with the EVM, which means that Ethereum applications can be seamlessly deployed on this network without learning new programming languages or frameworks. This compatibility allows users to enjoy the new features, speed, and cost benefits of these dApps without learning anything additional.
In February of this year, Zircuit launched a staking program, gradually coming into the public eye. It allows users to earn rewards including staking APR, re-staking APR, Eigenlayer points, LRT points, and Zircuit points by staking ETH, liquidity staking tokens (LST), and liquidity re-staking tokens (LRT). Currently, Zircuit has partnered with star projects such as Ethena, Ether.fi, Renzo, EigenLayer, Lido, and Swell. Unlike hard lock methods like Blast and Mantle, Zircuit allows users to withdraw funds at any time while retaining earned points and profits, similar to demand deposits.
At present, Zircuit is still in the testnet phase, with its mainnet expected to launch as early as this summer. Based on airdrop expectations, users can participate in testnet testing, engage in “Build to Earn” or join its staking program, which involves staking ETH and its derivatives, as well as participating in various tasks to earn Zircuit points for future token rewards.
Another point of concern for many is that Zircuit uses native ETH and currently does not have a governance token (this does not mean there won’t be one in the future).
Technical Highlights:
Zircuit itself is an Ethereum ZK Layer 2, and its main innovation lies in the introduction of the concept of Sequencer Level Security (SLS). This mechanism aims to provide enhanced security to ensure that users’ assets and data are fully protected during transactions on the Layer 2 blockchain, preventing malicious transactions and hacker attacks. Additionally, its design minimizes the impact on the sequencer’s performance, especially on serialization throughput and latency, to maintain the network’s efficiency and responsiveness. Its transparent operational mechanism allows the state of the blockchain to be clearly defined and derived, ensuring the network’s predictability and stability.
Specifically, Zircuit’s sequencer monitors and detects malicious activities in the Mempool, which is the collection of transactions that have not yet been included in a block. The SLS (Smart Layer Security) uses specific algorithms or techniques to determine whether a transaction has malicious intent. If a transaction is identified as malicious, it will be placed in an isolation area and temporarily cannot be included in the block. It will only be considered for inclusion once it meets the release conditions, that is, after its legitimacy has been verified. The SLS can also use a hybrid parallel-sequential method for malicious detection to optimize detection speed and accuracy. It combines parallel simulation at the tip of the chain with sequential simulation within the block to fully leverage their respective advantages.
Apart from SLS, another feature of Zircuit is the use of proprietary proof aggregation technology, which breaks down circuits into fast parallel processes to improve processing speed and efficiency.
Market Heat
The Zircuit community has attracted over 112,000 Twitter followers and 125,000 Discord members within 4 months. The rapid growth in community numbers has led to early success in Zircuit’s staking plan. According to DefiLlama’s data, from 2018 to the present, Starkware only has 229,000 Twitter followers and a TVL (Total Value Locked) of $134 million. In contrast, Zircuit is expected to surpass Starkware in terms of community engagement and TVL.
With the rapid rise of EigenLayer, Zircuit fully leverages people’s interest in re-staking protocols.
Through Zircuit Staking, users can earn Zircuit points on top of any staking rewards or other existing points. Users who choose to migrate assets when Zircuit’s mainnet goes live will receive the highest rewards. Unlike ETH in Blast or Mantle, ETH will not be forcibly locked, and you can withdraw funds at any time while retaining the points and profits earned. Currently, Zircuit has supported Lido Finance, Renzo Protocol, Swell Network, Kelp DAO, and Liquid Collective, and will integrate more protocols in the coming weeks.
Furthermore, Zircuit has launched a staking program, allowing users to deposit native ETH or liquidity staking tokens (LSTs) into the network to earn points and re-staked native rewards. To date, Zircuit has attracted over 1100 applications to participate in its “Build to Earn” program, and the total value of its staking has exceeded 3.5 billion US dollars.
Investment and Development
Zircuit is supported by several well-known investment institutions, including Binance Labs, Pantera, and Dragonfly. Binance Labs has stated that its investment will help Zircuit achieve further development, accelerate its network growth, and promote the advancement of L2 technology.
Summary
Personally, I believe that Zircuit’s concept of controlling the memory pool is actually very reasonable. Most of the current hack transactions are traceable, such as a transaction where the interacting contract was created recently and only interacted by one person, and after the interaction, a large amount of funds were transferred out, or a large number of assets were suspiciously transferred through cross-chain bridges. Starting from the transaction pool for security is actually the most acceptable point at the moment. Most project parties will not, and are not willing to trace or intercept transactions that have already occurred, such as the rug project on zksync, or the hack attack project, etc. Once these projects are attacked and enter the cross-chain bridge, it is equivalent to a death sentence, and the official personnel are also not willing to damage their concept of decentralization because of such matters.
However, intercepting from the transaction pool is the most effective and reasonable method. Currently, all L2s do not have a decentralized sequencer, so the centralized part itself is the most secure point.
But in fact, I think Zircuit’s SLS can actually serve as an intermediate price service, providing security for other L2s, which is actually an extension of business. In the long run, L2 security itself is an important indicator, which is related to whether the funds of this chain are safe and reliable. Increasing the cost of crime brings the benefit of more funds entering more at ease. Conceptually, Zircuit’s logic is closed and reasonable, but currently, Zircuit has not opened any code. After open source, there may be an opportunity for more in-depth research.
