Ferrule MPC

keyword:Ferrule, Farcaster, Architecture, Principle, Social Re-Staking
Editor’s Note: The buzz surrounding Farcaster has propelled the community to pay further attention to the creator economy track. The day before yesterday, the ANAGRAM development team launched the Farcaster-based protocol Ferrule, a protocol designed to decentralize Farcaster Hubs and enhance security. Ferrule enables anyone to build their own Farcaster client, ensuring user autonomy and ownership. The goal of Ferrule is to establish a scalable and sustainable network through the Eigenlayer AVS by incentivizing node operators and implementing data sharding, addressing the current architecture of Farcaster where client applications have inconsistent incentives and centralization issues.
David Alexander, a partner at the ANAGRAM development team, explained the expectations for Ferrule. Ferrule began with its thoughts on the incentive system of the Farcaster ecosystem, hoping to further promote innovation and decentralization in the Farcaster ecosystem. BlockBeats has compiled the relevant content as follows:
One of the fundamental promises of blockchain is digital sovereignty and ownership. Traditional systems have fundamentally collapsed over a long period of time. The emergence of cutting-edge technology allows us to transcend these systems and enter a new paradigm. Social media is one of the many systems that require large-scale reform. This view is neither new nor unique. Since the Bitclout era, developers, users, and investors have been advocating for a decentralized social graph, a certification layer, and everything that comes with it.
Many have tried, but all have failed. Now, Farcaster has emerged, a fully decentralized social network application built on Ethereum and supported by Optimism.
The Background of Ferrule’s Launch
The Current State of Farcaster
Farcaster functions similarly to X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. Users can quickly join the network, create profiles, post ‘casts’ similar to tweets, and follow other users. Much of the heavy technical work is done by Warpcast, a Farcaster client that abstracts technical complexity, making the user experience seamless.
Unlike X and Reddit, Farcaster allows users to have their own accounts as well as the social graphs and relationships they create with other users. This represents a significant upgrade over existing traditional systems. Each user can move freely between different Farcaster applications, thereby ensuring user autonomy and ownership within the client.
The architecture of Farcaster is as follows:
Hub: Similar to blockchain nodes, Hubs store data and listen for specific information about users on Ethereum and Optimism.
Client applications: Applications used on the Farcaster platform, which are essentially on-chain key pairs and datasets. Client application publishers can use these to act on behalf of users, allowing them to publish, read data, and perform other operations.
Farcaster has built a “fully decentralized” system, enabling users to have portable identities across different client applications. This is similar to using Google to log in to Facebook and X, but Farcaster goes a step further by making data portable as well. Different client applications can create unique user experiences based on the same data. For example, Warpcast is similar to Twitter, while another application might feel more like Discord.
Client applications must connect to a Hub, but a Hub is not obligated to allow communication. Hubs are similar to Web2 web servers, and it is free for client applications to read or write data to a Hub. Typically, the team that develops a client application (such as Warpcast) also runs the Hub nodes they are connected to, making them the “operators” of the Hub. Anyone can run a Hub, and a network is created if the initial configuration points to other Hubs.
Users can have portable cryptocurrency balances, and client applications can create fiat currency wallets or attached client application-specific cryptocurrency balances. For example, Warpcast users pay “warp” fees, which are used for global Farcaster storage and Warpcast-specific features.
This architecture is known as “fully decentralized” because it assumes that multiple client applications operate independently, and anyone who builds a client or connects an application must run a node or purchase access rights to a node’s operation.
Urgent Issues
Misaligned Network Incentives:
Farcaster operates through Hubs, which store data and facilitate communication between Ethereum and Optimism. Hubs host APIs that allow client applications to read and write data. Users must pay for storage fees by calling the “rent” function on the Optimism smart contract. This payment mechanism may reduce spam and bot accounts, but no part of the rent is allocated to node operators. As Farcaster develops, a single node may not be able to bear the storage requirements. Horizontal scaling or incentivizing node operators could address this issue.
Centralization of Client Applications:
Warpcast is the core contributor and creator of Farcaster, and it is also the most widely used client application. If only one client dominates, Farcaster could become another centralized social media platform. Client applications use a single key to represent user operations, which is similar to the way web3 wallets work, but with considerable power. Integrating smart wallet technology could allow users to use their Farcaster key accounts as the primary wallet.
Ferrule: Introducing Incentives for Nodes in Farcaster
What makes Farcaster interesting is not only its technological achievements but also the community it fosters. However, the ultimate form of Farcaster has not yet been realized. Now we introduce Ferrule, a protocol built within Farcaster that allows anyone to build their own client for Farcaster.
The Importance of Ferrule
Currently, Farcaster’s economic model is limited. Specifically, there are no incentives to encourage people to run a Farcaster Hub, leading to Farcaster managing the entire network. Although this is not fully centralized, it is also not fully decentralized, so Farcaster is touted as “fully decentralized.” By introducing Ferrule, the path to a more decentralized network will benefit greatly.
The benefits of a fully decentralized network are significant. Just like Ethereum and Solana, state growth is becoming an increasingly problematic issue. As more users join and interact, the burden of data storage falls entirely on Farcaster. This is not only a matter of centralization and scalability but also a sustainable state growth issue. With mass adoption, this problem will accelerate.
Farcaster’s growth shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to gain momentum with over 60,000 unique users daily, a sequential increase of 66%. With exponential growth, the embedded user activity in each unique account is also increasing. Although anyone can run a Farcaster node, there are no incentives. Incentivizing node growth is crucial for the optimal scaling of the system.
Ferrule is a new design for Farcaster Hubs, operating as an Eigenlayer Active Validation Service (AVS). It is capable of leveraging existing assets to secure and ensure the operation of the Hubs and the proper functioning of the Farcaster protocol. Users re-stake assets into the Ferrule contract, dynamically delegating assets to Hubs based on network behavior. Some of the staking rewards will be distributed as incentives to Hub operators, while a portion of the storage account rental costs will also be covered.
Currently, Farcaster Hubs have limited data integrity checks and there are no economic disincentives to prevent spam or manipulation. Ferrule aims to address this issue by ensuring that Hubs operate verifiably and securely. Ferrule nodes broadcast cryptographically verifiable proof of their correct operation. Economic incentives encourage proper behavior, and inaction or malicious behavior will be punished through dilution.
As Ferrule evolves, it aims to address the issues of state growth and client/Hub centralization. Incentivized Hubs can create a routing system, ensuring they do not need to store all data and are rewarded for storage and data access provision. The design of Ferrule aims to make centralization less viable by rewarding the correct Hub behavior.
Ferrule Roadmap
Re-staking mechanism:
Re-collateralization: Users can re-stake their existing assets (such as ETH or other compatible tokens) into the Ferrule contract. This staking process binds their assets to the security of Farcaster Hubs.
Dynamic Delegation: Staked assets are dynamically delegated to various Hubs based on the behavior and needs of the network. This ensures that the network can maintain security and respond to changes in usage patterns.
Incentives:
Rewards for Hub Operators: A portion of the staking rewards and the rental cost of storage accounts will be allocated to Hub operators. This provides an economic incentive for maintaining the integrity and performance of the network.
Economic Disincentives: Economic penalties are imposed on Hubs for inaction or malicious behavior through a dilution mechanism. This ensures that Hubs are motivated to operate correctly and securely.
Verifiable Operations:
Cryptographic Proofs: Ferrule nodes must broadcast cryptographically verifiable evidence of their correct operation. These proofs are used to ensure that the operations executed by Hubs are legitimate and comply with network rules.
Consensus Mechanism: The AVS framework ensures that all Hubs operate in a verifiable manner, fostering a trustless environment where users can have confidence in the reliability of the network.
Data Sharding and Routing:
State Growth Management: To manage state growth, Ferrule combines data sharding and routing mechanisms. This approach ensures that no single Hub needs to store all data, distributing the storage load across the entire network.
Data Access Incentives: Hubs are rewarded for storing data and providing access. Proofs of data storage are broadcasted within the network, creating a map of data locations and ensuring efficient data retrieval.
Ferrule MPC
MPC Framework:
Multi-Party Computation (MPC): Ferrule MPC utilizes MPC technology, allowing multiple parties to jointly compute functions while maintaining the privacy of their inputs. This ensures that sensitive user data remains confidential during the collaborative process.
Client and Connector Applications: The MPC framework enables the development of truly decentralized clients or connector applications on Farcaster. These applications can operate securely and independently, interacting with the network without compromising user privacy.
Fine-grained Authorization: Ferrule MPC supports the creation of an authorization system that allows users to delegate specific operations through their accounts. This is akin to the emerging pattern in blockchains where users can authorize specific activities through their wallets.
Smart Wallet Technology: The integration of smart wallet technology allows users to utilize their Farcaster key accounts as the primary wallet. This integration provides a seamless user experience, enabling users to manage their cryptographic assets and social interactions from a single account.
API and Data Interfaces:
Standardized Data Access Points: The hub offers standardized data access points, ensuring that client applications can interact with network data in a consistent manner. This standardization simplifies the development of new applications and enhances interoperability.
Extensible Object Model: Client applications (such as Warpcast) can extend the Farcaster object model to include additional features, such as pre-computed social graphs and behavioral data. This flexibility can create diverse and innovative user experiences.
Ferrule MPC is a library and a set of examples for teams to run decentralized clients or connect applications on Farcaster. If fully implemented, it will become a core part of Ferrule. Although not yet fully ready for release, Ferrule MPC is intended to spark discussions within the Farcaster community about addressing these pressing issues.
We hope that Ferrule MPC will prove to be a useful tool for moving forward.
