title:EigenLayer Staking: Potential Wealth Code or Hidden Risk?
description:EigenLayer Staking: Potential Wealth Code or Hidden Risk?
keyword:EigenLayer, Re-staking, Mechanism
Recently, EigenLayer has launched the first phase of the Eigen airdrop event, which has garnered significant market enthusiasm and is considered a leading force in the staking race of this bull market cycle. Currently, Eigen has only enabled staking functionality and is not yet transferable or tradable, making the decision to participate in Eigen staking a hotly debated topic in the market. To assist in understanding, this article will clarify the staking mechanism of EigenLayer, the potential rewards from staking, the risks involved, and the author will also share their own views on whether to stake EIGEN at the end of the article.
First and foremost, it’s important to note that the staking mechanism of EigenLayer is significantly different from the PoS staking mechanism of the Ethereum mainnet, but it bears a closer resemblance to the staking logic of the Cosmos community. This is evident in everything from the structure of the staking interface to the node airdrop marketing, which carries a strong Cosmos influence. Therefore, to some extent, one can refer to the strategies and tactics used in Cosmos.
EigenLayer: Ethereum Re-staking
Re-staking refers to the process of utilizing ETH that has already been staked on the Ethereum mainnet to support the security of other projects. By doing so, users can not only earn returns from their original staking but also increase potential rewards by supporting more projects.
Founded in 2021, EigenLayer is a pioneer in the concept of re-staking. It is a middleware platform situated between the Ethereum mainnet and other applications. The platform allows stakers to re-stake their ETH and ETH staking derivative tokens (LSTs) onto EigenLayer by deploying mainnet smart contracts.
Since its launch in June 2023, EigenLayer has experienced rapid growth, with the total value staked exceeding $10 billion, making it one of the largest blockchain protocols in the market. The total value staked even surpasses many major decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, such as Aave, Rocket Pool, and Uniswap.
Dual Staking
With the introduction of the $Eigen token, the assets accepted for staking by EigenLayer are no longer limited to the re-staking business of ETH and ETH LSTs. They now also include staking services for $Eigen and the native tokens issued by various AVSs in the future.
This is the innovative dual staking concept introduced by EigenLayer: the “re-staking” service of ETH series tokens and the “staking” service of Eigen series tokens are collectively responsible for maintaining the security of EigenLayer.
To understand dual staking, one must first understand Quorum (translated as: the required number of participants).
In the context of EigenLayer, Quorum specifically refers to a group of assets (re-staking/staking assets) that are used for shared security adopted by AVS (Anti-Sybil Validator System). Node operators can choose to join one or more token Quorums based on the composition of assets staked to their nodes and the design of AVS. According to the official introduction, the AVS team can decide on the numerical settings and asset composition within the Quorum, and the setting of the Quorum is not static; it can be changed after the AVS is launched to adapt to the market environment in a timely manner.
The innovation of dual staking effectively alleviates the security issues of traditional Proof of Stake (PoS) networks caused by the massive issuance of local tokens by introducing more stable assets as security guarantees. Dual staking provides continuous economic support for the network by introducing externally stable tokens such as Ethereum, thereby maintaining the overall security and stability of the PoS network.
After the network operates smoothly, it is possible to adjust the inclination of the staking ratio of the two types of tokens, that is, to increase the proportion of native tokens to enhance the autonomy and independence of the network.
Although dual staking has improved the network’s risk resistance and provided a richer economic toolbox for the project party, it also brings new challenges and risks.
Firstly, this mechanism to some extent negates the sovereignty of the project’s tokens, weakening the value and use of the network’s original tokens, so more empowerment may be needed to offset the negative impact of losing sovereignty.
Additionally, this flexible staking mechanism also introduces a certain degree of centralization risk, especially since the modification of the quorum decision may not be entirely transparent or widely participated in by the community, which may involve centralized decision-making.
As for the EigenLayer project itself, under the same dual staking scenario, there is also a difference in the unstaking time between the native token Eigen and the ETH series tokens.
EigenLayer’s mainnet contract has set a 7-day withdrawal delay for LST tokens and ETH re-stake, while the withdrawal window for EIGEN tokens is 24 days. The team’s explanation for the differentiated withdrawal times is that more unique features will be given to EIGEN in the future (requiring a longer unlock time), and what specific features will make the unlock time of EIGEN three times that of ETH is yet unknown. This mechanism of setting an extremely long unlock time without transparency in the mechanism undoubtedly brings huge risks to EIGEN stakers. In summary, it has made economic achievements and provided the project team with a high degree of flexibility and scalability, but retail investors need to carefully discern and guard against risks in actual operations, especially in the setting of important protocol parameters and changes in the unlocking mechanism, and to pay more attention to centralized risks.
EigenDA is a data availability storage solution developed by EigenLabs and built on the EigenLayer platform. The system has been online on the mainnet since the second quarter of 2024. Due to EigenLayer’s documentation not being specific about the avs staking parameters, and EigenDA being the first avs, we can get a glimpse of the staking parameter setting ideas of EigenLayer avs through the parameters of EigenDA. The active operator node limit for EigenDA on the mainnet and Holesky testnet is set at 200. According to the document’s explanation, this limit is due to the cost of bridging EigenDA’s availability proofs to Ethereum L1, and it is expected that this cost will be reduced with technological improvements, which will hopefully relax the limit on the number of operators. The document requires a minimum staking asset for nodes: operators joining Ethereum (ETH) need to stake at least 96 ETH; while operators joining the EIGEN group need to stake at least 1 EIGEN. Compared to the newly issued PoS public chains, the number of EigenDA nodes is not much, and it is at the same level as the Cosmos series, and a cap on the number of nodes has been set. In comparison, other well-known PoS public chains do not limit the number of nodes, but choose to set a minimum staking asset. For example, Solana and Avalanche both have more than 1,700 nodes, and Ethereum has more than one million validators.
EigenDA imposes restrictions on node groups from both asset and quantity perspectives. Under such stringent conditions, it is not surprising that there may be a shortage of nodes that meet the asset requirements and do not exceed the avs set limit of 200. For instance, currently, there are only 147 active nodes in EigenDA.
Of course, the number of nodes is not entirely correlated with network security, and this is just for your reference and comparison.
When the number of operators reaches the upper limit (200), new operators wishing to join must have a group weight more than 1.1 times that of the current operator with the lowest weight in order to replace that operator.
However, there is a significant challenge hidden here, which is also one of the core issues that restaking aims to solve:
A standard PoS chain can easily verify the status of native assets within nodes and autonomously update the set of valid nodes according to the rules, but EigenLayer is different because the restaked assets are on the Ethereum mainnet, and the nodes of EL cannot directly obtain the dynamics of the Ethereum mainnet.
Therefore, a secure and decentralized method is needed to prove that the upper nodes meet the requirements.
If this step cannot be decentralized, then malicious actors may illegally replace legitimate nodes and subsequently attack the EL consensus.
The difficulty lies in the fact that considering using a smart contract to solve this problem is unrealistic, because the computational cost and complexity of sorting or maintaining a priority queue on the chain are very high.
To solve this problem, EigenLayer has opted for a compromise, introducing a combination of off-chain Churn Approvers and on-chain smart contract checks.
When the network reaches the operator upper limit, if a new operator wishes to join, the new operator can apply to the “Churn Approver” for a signature. The approver will check whether the new operator meets the financial requirements and then provide a signature. Finally, the signature and operator change information will be input to the mainnet EigenDA smart contract.
This mechanism, which relies on off-chain signatures, although it provides convenience and flexibility in operation, also introduces a certain degree of centralized risk.
The off-chain signing process may be affected by improper operations of the approver or system security vulnerabilities, thereby affecting the decentralization and security assurance of the entire network.
Additionally, the document does not mention the risk associated with the decommissioning of the human authorization device. If the offline validator does not respond to the new node’s online request, the validator of EigenDA cannot be replaced according to the rules, and the validator that needs to be excluded can still participate in the validation, which is a very dangerous thing. Therefore, any link to the off-chain mechanism requires special attention from users.

The Vanishing Slash & Reward Mechanism and Staking Strategy
The punishment and reward (Slash & Reward) mechanism is the core mechanism of all PoS networks, but due to the hasty launch of EigenLayer, the reward and punishment functions have not yet been implemented. Everyone should be familiar with the reward part, which produces apr, plus the expectation of airdrops. The punishment (reduction, Slashing) part is more complex. If the operator does not fulfill his obligations, such as the node going down or being offline for a period of time, or secondary signatures, etc., the user’s funds entrusted to this node will be deducted by a certain percentage, and the node’s apr emission may also be shut down. It should be noted that EigenLayer has not yet announced the details, and the above introduction of the reward and punishment mechanism is summarized based on other PoS projects.
From the author’s point of view, this operation is quite outrageous, because when users participate in re-staking, these rules have not yet been launched, and most people are unaware of the existence of Slashing. In the future, if the node entrusted by the user is malicious or has a fault, the user will lose funds without knowing it. If the re-staking users consider the safety of funds, they should try to distribute the stakes among different operators. In this way, risks can be diversified, and only a portion of the funds will be lost if Slashing occurs.
According to the marketing reward direction of the EigenLayer ecosystem, choosing the most famous node with a point airdrop plan for re-staking can obviously obtain the maximum expected return, and this incentive measure is exactly contrary to the original intention of maintaining decentralization.

Conclusion
Restaking, as an emerging technology, is attracting widespread attention both within and outside the industry. Particularly, according to a report on March 15th, the co-founder of the largest Ethereum mainnet staking protocol Lido and Paradigm are secretly funding a new project named Symbiotic to enter the restaking field, which is sufficient to confirm the industry trend.
However, despite the enormous potential for development in the restaking market, the technical challenges faced by EigenLayer discussed in this article should not be underestimated. Especially, the Ethereum mainnet has not included restaking in EIP.
Currently, the proposal on how to enable the mainnet to obtain EigenLayer’s exit verifier has not been finalized, which brings a certain degree of uncertainty. The imperfection of the technology increases the risk of participating in re-staking, especially in situations where assets may be slashed.
At present, the design of EigenLayer is more inclined towards economic benefits rather than technology. If technical issues can be resolved, projects specializing in economic benefits will inevitably bring significant returns.
Overall, EigenLayer has shown great market potential and growth space in the wave of re-staking. Although currently facing some technical and standardization challenges, these are stepping stones on the road to growth.
As these issues are gradually resolved, we have reason to believe that EigenLayer will be able to accelerate innovation while achieving its long-term economic goals.
